Elly sighed to herself as she sank down onto her favorite couch. The massive cushions were comfortable and smelled good, a sleepy mix of her favorite lavender scent. Her ears twitched as she listened to the bustle of Sanji getting ready for dinner in the kitchen. It was far enough away that everything was muted, but she liked to know he was there. It was almost as comforting as the pillowy softness she was burying her head in. Yawing hugely, she rolled over to lay flat on her stomach. This gave her striped tail free reign to lash behind her as she pondered the events of the day. She wasn't agitated, per se, just not as relaxed as she'd like. The gigantic theme park she lived on the very outskirts on took a lot of effort to run smoothly, and she was almost always in the middle of the fray, as it were. She was just starting to fall asleep when she felt a light, almost diffident tap on her shoulder.

"Hey."

"Ughh..." She slowly opened one eye, then the other, truly reluctant to be awake. "What's up?"

"Dinner." The big man in front of her crouched down to be on her level. He smelled just like he always did - steel and musk, yet another comfort smell for her. She yawned again, two sharp canines glinting in the light before she remembered to cover her mouth.

"Mmnn, Zoro. Lemme sleep a little longer."

Zoro rolled his eyes - the one on the right, anyway. He knew better to argue with the sleepy demon cat, however, and simply jerked a thumb in the direction of the kitchen. "Dumbass made fried pork cutlets."

Elly's ears snapped straight up. "Pork cutlets?!" She bounced up into a sitting position and rolled slightly to one side when she didn't quite do it gracefully.

"Watch it, stupid cat!"

"Whoop. Heh heh." She stretched, working a few kinks out before attempting to move again. Zoro shook his head at her antics and stood up, dusting his black pants off. He wore what he normally wore when off-duty - a simple white shirt, black pants and boots paired with his green haramaki. He was never without his swords, even when relaxing, and he set one hand on them as he watched Elly stand beside him. "Yay! Pork."

He couldn't repress the hint of a smile. "He said you deserved it."

"I didn't work that hard today." She shook herself and walked quickly through the dining room to the kitchen. Sanji spun about when she opened the door, a huge grin on his face.

"Angel! You're awake!"

"And hungry," she said, grinning impudently at her chef. He set the plate of vegetables he was holding hurriedly on the table in front of him and rushed to meet her. Zoro grunted with disgust as he caught her in a huge hug.

"I made one of your favorites."

"I know," she giggled. His enthusiasm was infectious. And anyway, she didn't need extra enthusiasm for pork - it was her favorite meat. She kissed him softly on the cheek, eliciting another sound of discontent from the swordsman and a happy cry from the cook. Zoro said nothing, however, just loaded his plate with food.

"Hey, don't start before everyone sits down!" Sanji glared at him. Zoro ignored him and kept eating.

"This looks great!" Elly was ignoring them both since it was normal for the two to be at odds with each other. They didn't really hate one another, but they always argued. She said thanks, filled her plate and began to eat. Sanji grumbled a little but took off his pink apron and hung it on a hook. His clothing was as impeccable as always and he absently straightened his tie as he sat down and also filled a plate.

"Are you going back out tonight?" He raised a curly eyebrow at Elly.

"Oh, no. Not again," she groaned, her ears laying back.

"I just think you need a night to yourself," he stressed. "You've been out there all the time. You can't do it all yourself, you know."

"But I like doing it. The fireworks display is tonight. I love that."

Sanji swirled the water around in his cup thoughtfully. "All right, but you could watch that from the rooftop, baby. You haven't had a break in a long time."

"You could." Zoro shrugged.

"You're not agreeing with him?"

"Nggh," he replied around a mouthful of food.

"Chew, you damned neanderthal," Sanji snapped.

Zoro swallowed mightily. "Shut up," he said absently. Then, to Elly, "You're too tired. I'm supposed to make sure you don't hurt yourself. Can't do that if you're a walking accident waiting to happen."

"I hate it when you're right," she muttered.

"Then stay home."

"Okay, okay!"

"Don't fill up, then," Sanji smiled. "I'll make something for later ... if you promise to watch the fireworks with me."

"Oh." Her tone changed. "Well... all right." She got up to stack her dishes neatly in the dishwasher. "I'm going to go sit by the pool for awhile until it gets dark enough for the show."

"Good idea." Sanji beamed at her as she opened the sliding glass door to the back of the kitchen. He heard her calling out to the guy that was on duty cleaning the pool and watched until she was out of sight. Then he sighed happily as he began to clean up the rest of the dishes. Zoro had already put his away and was stomping out the doorway that led to the elevator. The blond man shrugged. He'd probably go work out in the gym now that he didn't have to shadow Elly around. Not that he cared - all he could think about was making the perfect dessert for their little rooftop date.

The door slid shut behind her and Elly looked about, keen ears picking up the light swishing sound of water in the pool. "Hey, why aren't you at the dorm? Aren't they having some kind of game night?"

"Yah!" The young man standing waist-deep in the shallows jerked his head up at the sound of her voice, his wet hair flopping back and hose precariously held in one hand. He banged the vacuum the hose was attached to and yelped again.

"Oh, sorry." She chuckled and sat down on the edge, dipping her feet in.

"Like, warn a guy next time," he gasped, sounding extremely out of breath. "I damn near had a heart attack!"

"Sorry, Shaggy."

"Sorry, my foot," he winced, rubbing at a stubbed toe. He checked the machine to make sure the hose hadn't jarred loose, and, finding it okay, began to scrub the floor again.

"Awww. You know I didn't mean to. But why aren't you there having fun? I thought you loved those games."

"Yeah, yeah." He waved his free hand diffidently out to the west side of the house where the sprawling apartment complex was located. "I can't concentrate if this isn't perfect."

"Really?" The lights around the infinity pool slowly started to glow, illuminating the deck as dusk slipped into a deeper darkness. The only sounds besides their conversation were the soft rasp of the bristles and the crash of the waves from the ocean in front of them. It was soothing, and she sat for a few minutes in silence.

Without being coerced, Shaggy suddenly told her the real reason why he was working so late. "Scoob's got this bet with me if he beats me in the first round."

"So you're stalling."

"Uh huh." He sank deeper in past his waist. "I really don't wanna lose."

"How is he so good at gaming? He doesn't have thumbs."

"It's not him, it's me," Shaggy groaned. "I suck." Elly couldn't hold back a soft giggle at this. He was too busy lamenting his already-lost bet to notice that, though, or the fact that the door whooshed open behind them.

"Angel," Sanji called out in a low, sultry voice. "I've come for our date."

"Date?"

"Well, isn't it?" He stepped forth into the light and she smiled. He had changed outfits again and now wore a blue t-shirt and faded jeans, with gently worn leather loafers on his feet. He nodded briefly to Shaggy, who nodded back. "I just had to clean myself up a little after making dessert. The rooftop's all set - shall we go?"

"Yep." She held her hand out and he took it in his. He smiled at her and suddenly reached further up, grasping her forearm to pull her safely and quite firmly into his arms. "Sanji!"

He grinned harder at her exasperated tone. "Sorry, love - sometimes I can't resist."

"Isn't that all the time?"

"Mmm." He paused, thinking as he led her into the house and in the elevator that would carry them to the roof. "I have to admit... yes." Elly was silent after this exchange. He was warm against her and he wouldn't let go of her hand. She didn't mind - it was a comfort she rarely indulged in. His palms were sliced with thin cuts - not many, and they were still quite smooth, but she could feel them. Cooking accidents. One didn't work in a kitchen all your life without cutting yourself a few times.

"Ah, here we are." The elevator's bell chimed and the doors opened at last into the cool night air on the highest floor of the mansion. Sanji stepped to one side and let go of her hand to bow before her, gesturing briefly. "I set a table up on the north side, facing the park. Oh, and the current caretaker is at that game thing the dorm's holding... so we're all alone." The roof was large, with many elaborate gardens. This required someone to care for them, and whoever wanted to do so was allowed to live in a larger apartment right here - bigger than the ones at the dorm, even. But when she glanced at the windows she saw it was dark - Sanji was right. James was probably at the games.

"Hmm." A light wind whipped at her hair and caused her ears to twitch. The table was small with a well-guarded candleholder set in the middle, a plate filled with something small and a bucket with a bottle set beside them. Sanji lifted this out with a flourish and she saw it was champagne. "Silly romantic," she chided gently.

"I can't help it," he murmured with a grin. "And, while I know you're not overly fond of chocolate," here he expertly popped the cork and began to fill the two tall glasses, "I thought that would also be appropriate." He placed the drink near her, along the plate, and she peered closer. White chocolate-covered strawberries! She should have known. Sanji pulled his chair close beside hers as they watched the glow of the lights from the park.

"It's always so pretty."

"And the show's soon, right?" He checked his watch. "Ah. Now." Just as he spoke, the sky in the far distance was speckled with a rainbow of lights. Elly sighed again and leaned close to the cook's side. He lifted his arm and carefully placed it about her shoulders, allowing her to relax completely against him.

"This is nice. Thank you," she said simply.

"You needed to relax, love." He smiled at her. "You know none of us will let you get stressed... even if work is fun, you still need fun other than work."

"Mmm-hmm." She snuggled closer and watched the pretty light show in the night sky.

Eventually she fell asleep. Sanji watched her for some time, not wanting to move but knowing he had to. At last, he stood and picked her up carefully in his arms. If he was quiet enough, he could perhaps tuck her into his bed tonight. He could sleep on the couch in his room, but he figured it wouldn't come to that anyway. And he wasn't wrong or surprised at all when he found Zoro waiting in the kitchen, drink in hand.

"Cook," he greeted him briefly.

"Moron," the other huffed. He knew what came next and was not pleased. Zoro grunted softly as he set his mug aside. The green-haired man didn't reply, simply held his arms out with an even stare. "All fucking right already." Sanji unwillingly transferred his warm, snoring bundle to the swordsman's arms. He had hoped that this one time the man would forget - but he never did. Zoro didn't sleep until he was certain Elly was in bed.

The rooms below were off-limits to everyone except Elly and her bodyguard. Zoro even had rooms next to hers, proof that she trusted him the most of any of her companions. The big man ignored the dagger-like stare Sanji was aiming at his back. He walked into the elevator and pressed the second-to-lowest floor button. When the lift chimed in a few minutes, he opened the side that would give him immediate access to her quarters. He was immediately surrounded by the soft glow of an underwater kingdom. Elly's grand suite was flanked all the way around by an elaborate aquarium setup. It began one floor above - one below the main floor, to be exact -- and continued down two levels below. She had one more room under this that he'd never even been in. He had no idea what was in it, nor was he curious. She was safe when she was here; nothing could get at her behind the bedroom door that had a special lock. He shifted slightly as he reached it, lining his face before a small panel. The door opened and he pushed in, making his way to the giant bed in one corner. Fish flashed by in yet more wall tanks - different ones, many a bit duller in color than the ones outside but still interesting. He pulled back the coverlet and laid her carefully down, waiting until she yawned and cuddled into a pillow before pulling the top sheet up to her hands. She grasped it and settled down with a content sound.

Still silent, Zoro turned and walked out the bedroom, closing the door behind him. He slowly crossed the huge suite until he reached another door near the elevator. This one led to a hallway that on the other side of yet another door was his room. He flopped into his bed at last, asleep almost before his head touched the pillow.

His Little Experiment

"His Little Experiment"

Roliana - Elly x Franz, adult
(Roliana is a PG site, I was simply inspired to write this)

The Laboratory had a scent that had drawn her closer and closer to it, pulling her in though the building seemed darker than the ones around it, more terrifying. She'd crawled past the bushes lining the toy shop to the medical building with some trepidation, hoping that she would find a kindly person to help answer some of her questions.

Why was she different?

The answer might not be here, she thought glumly as she looked around, her cat's eyes immediately adjusting to the dimmer light inside the building. It was downright dark, the only light some kind of unnatural blue glow that looked like it came from a weird ectoplasm inside large tubes. Whatever was inside those tubes was concealed, she noted with much relief. She wasn't sure she wanted to know.

"Ah," a voice suddenly whispered out of the shadows. Elly jerked and spun towards it.

"Who's there? The door was open, I..."

"Not anymore." Indeed she heard the pneumatic locks snick shut.

"Uh oh." She was trapped inside the laboratory with the Doctor. Everyone in Roliana knew about him, of course. If you wanted a different eye color or skin type all you had to do was pay him in gold and he'd provide the service. Everyone who came away from his "shop" went off happy but...distracted. As if they couldn't remember something that bothered them quite a bit. Elly flicked her ears nervously, her tail swishing behind her. Two glowing red eyes were staring at her from the corner.

"Ist du, katze?" He stepped out of the dark and into the light around one of the cylinders that flanked the room. She blushed suddenly, eyes darting over his lean form. My goodness, but he was attractive! He had red eyes and white, sharp-looking teeth that glinted as he smiled at her. His body was whipcord lean and his lab coat - a long white shirt really -- was buttoned carelessly across the front so that his neck and part of his chest was revealed. She noted long, curving scars that swept around his throat.

"Dr. Franz?" He bowed mockingly, a hand running up to pull back the mop of thick brown hair that covered his forehead. He pushed a pair of very doctor-ish spectacles up the bridge of his nose.

"Hallo," he murmured. Elly's throat tightened as she watched his eyes roam down over her body ...much the same as she had done to him. Her cheeks flushed and she shook her head to clear it.

"I came to see you to ask some questions," she choked as he drew closer. He nodded absently, eyes still wandering over her body in a way that made her blush hotter. "Can you answer them?"

"Mit Vergnügen," he whispered fervently. "Was machst du heute abend?" He reached out and pulled her close to him by the wavy maroon and purple-striped tail she sported. Unlike the other Chesires on Roliana her tail had a double tip. He turned it over in his palm, staring at it in a worse distracting way than how he'd stared at her body. She could only gasp for air, shocked. Her ears were laid back in irritation. She should be fighting him but his scent was overpowering.

"Um. I don't speak German? Not really," she added, making a small face. She knew a few curses and some odd phrases but that was about all.

"Ich bin ..." Franz saw the blank look on her face and waved a hand around, searching for what he wanted to say. His English was all right but she figured he didn't know that much of the language very well. He spoke in a quiet, serious tone that belied the maniacal grin on his face. "...vant to spend zhe night vith du."

"What?" Elly blinked. If she'd heard correctly, this was the fastest come-on she had ever received. Taken aback she flicked her ears nervously as she thought, mind racing as fast as her pulse. Franz grimaced and then sighed, a fang showing clearly when he opened his mouth. The canine glinted in the soft lab light. Then his face brightened again, a wicked gleam sparkling in his eyes. They were already disconcerting, an albino sort of red that appeared to glow as her purple ones did in the dark. But she wasn't human.

What was he?

She didn't have much time to consider before he'd relinquished his hold on her split tail and stepped quickly around to her side. His arms snaked around her middle and drew her close.

"Ja," he agreed as she swore at him.

"Great," she gasped when he bent to pull her bubblegum scarf out of the way. The maroon silk swished to the floor and he nipped happily at the exposed flesh of her neck. "Hey! What kind of man are you - no kissing?" His reply was a dark little grumble in German that she couldn't decipher and a quick lap of his tongue.

"Turn around zhen." He smiled as she spun in his arms. The doctor was pleasantly sized, she noticed as they came together. She wouldn't have to reach up for him yet he was slightly taller than her, maybe an inch or so. He only had to bend his head down to press his mouth against hers and he slid an arm up her back as he did. She didn't think about that until his palm cupped the back of her head, twining in her purple hair and caressing the velvet of her ears. The deliberate rubbing heightened the kiss and she found herself falling gently against the blood-stained lab shirt, panting softly.

"You ..."

"Vhat?" His grin was wide. "Zhe doctor made zhis species." He ran his free hand over the curves of her back with a sort of possessive pride. "Franz told du he likes die katzen, ja?" Elly's mouth dropped open. He snickered softly and slipped his hand around to turn her chin up to face him.

"Franz hast veakness vor die katzen," he said as she hissed in protest.

"No kidding," Elly grumbled sourly. "It's so nice to meet your maker and realize he's a horny bastard." The doctor laughed so hard and long at this she pulled slightly back to watch him. She was suddenly reminded of those B-movie night marathons Jaire and the girls had thrown.

Mad scientists and all.

"Du are mein vonder of science," he told her seriously. "Katze ist more special than the others."

"Yeah, but now I know it's just some genetic freak you probably triggered," she sulked. He touched her pouty lip with one long finger and shook his head when she would have wrenched away. His hand grasped her tail firmly again, exploiting her weakness ruthlessly.

"Sei still!" He didn't use a harsh tone but it was definitely a command not a request. Before she could protest he took a step forward, pinning her body to the wall behind her with his own. He bent to kiss her again, this time sinking his sharp teeth into her lower lip and darting a quick tongue inside when she gasped. His lithe, slender body belied his strength and she was surprised to find she couldn't raise her arm if he was holding her wrist.

And his body was warm and smelled even better now. His arousal had brought out a stronger pheromone than any she'd ever smelled. Maybe he'd augmented it, he probably had the capability to do that sort of thing. She might ask him later but now he was biting at her tender neck again, his hands holding her and his lab coat flapping around them. Wait...flapping? Had he unbuttoned it all the way? She didn't know when it had happened but his white skin was naked to the waist now, crossed with odd scars and handsome maybe even because of that fact.

She lost track of time for a long wonderful moment, closing her eyes and letting him do what he pleased. Indeed she couldn't do anything else - the doctor had trapped her that securely. His hands were on the buttons of her pants now, unfastening and pushing the fabric down.

"Wait!"

"Nein," Franz told her firmly. He bit harder, drawing blood from her shoulder. She gasped and swallowed hard, throwing her freed hands around his neck, feeling the scars there and trying to hold on. She was unable to concentrate or know if this was what she wanted. Things were happening far too fast!

"All right, just don't... oh my god." His eyes glowed in the dimness of the lab as he shoved his own pants down.

"Don't vhat?"

"We're standing," she tried to protest but got no further when his mouth captured her own in a bruising kiss. His lips were flecked faintly with blood - her blood -- and he was growling deep in his throat as he thrust a hand down to where their bodies pressed hottest together. She guessed his intent and tensed, hands digging into his shoulder blades.

It hurt, she couldn't deny that. It hurt and burned as he stabbed into her body but it wasn't all pain and in the end she screamed as loudly as he could have wished her to.

"Katze," he rasped against her shoulder as he came, threshing wildly against her and then sighing with great relief. The glowing blue light from the lab played on his diminished member as he slipped out of her, panting like a wild animal. Fluid dripped to the floor that looked bluish but couldn't have been. Elly didn't notice.

"No one's not going to believe this," she gasped, her eyes wide.

"Nein? Tell zhem 'Laboratory K-E-B'," he smiled, biting at her shoulder yet again. "Du see, it vill vork." He paused. "Katze vill stay." He waved a hand at a door she hadn't noticed before and grinned at her expression.

"Tell me you had a bed in there."

"Ja," he chuckled shortly, red eyes growing feverishly in a way she would soon come to recognize.

Final Fantasy 8

The T-Rexaur swiped at Irvine with its heavy tail. The slender cowboy leaped nimbly over it, but wasn't prepared enough to meet a counter swipe of those needle-sharp claws. He fell back, gritting his teeth and clutching at his side.

"Heh. Too slow, pretty boy." Seifer flicked his massive gunblade out, slicing the mighty lizard across the nose. Elly was watching Irvine out of the corner of her eye. She absently snapped several cuts at the T-Rexaur with her leg whips.

"Are you okay, Kinneas?" She called out a little anxiously. "This one's strong! And we only have one cure spell remaining."

"Still shootin', aren't I?" The brunette boy responded shortly. He suited action to the word, jumping up and aiming carefully at the lizard's midsection. Seifer glanced over at Elly, watching her watch Irvine. A small flicker of annoyance crossed his coldly handsome features. He attacked next, triggering the gunblade as it connected for a more powerful strike. There was a small explosion, but still the giant reptile lived--and now it was angrier than ever. Elly had to miss her chance to attack by ducking instead as it tried to grasp her in its powerful jaws. She got lucky, but the wounded Irvine was slower, and the creature was lunging for him. She shrieked and desperately tried to draw the monster away by repeated blows to its side, but it snapped him up in a second and threw him to the ground. He grunted when he slammed into the mossy undergrowth. The slender brunette could barely lift himself up after that massive chomp, but he reeled back into position, struggling to bring his gun to bear. He was doubled over, panting hard and trying to keep the T-Rexaur in sight.

The mighty creature seemed to decide he was easy prey now. They watched it sizing him up, its head dipping, sniffing at the blood that was seeping through the young man's vest and trickling onto his chaps.

"Irvine!" She ran as fast as she could, but Seifer was already there. He pushed her to the ground and shook his head. Elly sat down hard, her legs splayed out from under her skirt. The silly yellow and red bow her female uniform had flapped in a small breeze.

"He's going to get killed!" She snarled at him. "Don't you care?!"

"And how is getting yourself killed going to help?" Seifer sighed when he saw her frown at him. Her teeth bared, she flew at the giant monster and started throwing every tactic she could at it.

"Don't be a hero!" Seifer growled. "Come on!" But he saw it was useless. He accessed the situation bitterly. He didn't want any of them to be a monster snack. And of course, he couldn't let Irvine be hurt either. Fingering his massive blade, he nodded once and slid it into its sheath-like holster. "All right," he murmured.

Elly had actually run out of strength before the T-Rexaur could be defeated. Spent and helpless, she was on her knees on the moist ground watching Irvine desperately trying to get a bead on his target. The giant lizard reared back, lunging forward...

...and suddenly, Seifer was in his place. He'd hurled himself several feet at the last second to throw himself in harm's way. Elly stood frozen in place, her hand outstretched, her mouth open in a soundless yell. Seifer cast thunder magic directly into the beast's mouth right before the jaws clamped firmly down upon him. The anguished girl heard the scarred older boy scream in agony when fangs sank into his chest and waist. She rushed forward again, but at that moment the thundara he had cast erupted deep within the creature's belly. It dropped Seifer and staggered back, its tail slashing through the air. Elly chanced a peek over her shoulder at the young cowboy, but he had managed to crawl someplace further away from the impending fall of the beast. The T-Rexaur finally fell over, the sounds of its hissing and snarling cutting off abruptly as it crumbled into ashes. Then the ashes blew away into the wind, flittering across their faces.

"Nice job," Irvine coughed quietly. He blinked at Elly and passed out. A quick check told her his bleeding had stopped, but Seifer had taken the massive ending blow intended for him, and he was in worse condition. The older blonde boy's eyes were squeezed tightly shut, his mouth pressed into a thin white line. He lay on his side, curled partially into a ball with his hands clutching his lower chest area. His writhing was quite inspired. She reached out and lightly touched his brow, and he moaned. The sound was so weak, so un-Seifer that she flinched a little. He had to be hurt badly, and they didn't have enough healing magic left. The training center this day had been filled with tougher monsters, and many had seized upon this better-than-average opportunity to hone their skills. But even they had underestimated their opponents. Elly thought fast, and realized they had a chance if she could get them to the secret area. Someone might be there that might have a few healing cure spells - with luck, a curaga -- to share.

"Let's go, Irvine," she muttered. "I know you were spared the last hit...you have to have some strength to walk." She lightly slapped the tanned boy's face, and those icy-blue shooter's eyes snapped open.

"Must be luck," he grunted as he staggered to a half-kneeling position. "Always...wake up...next to a pretty lady." He coughed again, faintly, then managed to prop himself up on his rifle. By ingeniously using it as a walking stick, he could move about. Elly smiled at him, relieved. "Seifer?" He asked next. She pointed, a worried frown crossing her pale features. "Hey - wake up, scarboy."

"Seifer?" She bent closer to him. "We really have to get moving," Elly fretted. "Another monster could come any minute, and we're definitely not prepared!" She slipped an arm around him and hefted. Irvine hobbled over and grasped the scarred boy's other side. Seifer hissed sharply and grabbed at his lower belly, but he said nothing. He was too battered to walk, so they half-carried, half-dragged him until they reached the now-somewhat questionable safety of the secret area. Irvine collapsed in a half-faint against the farthest wall while Elly bundled Seifer close to her for an examination. He didn't protest when she quickly stripped his cloak and vest off, baring the sleekly defined chest muscles he'd worked so hard to achieve. But even though he was in agony, his hand checked hers when she would have unbelted his pants.

"No," he coughed. "Let me be."

"Seifer, there's a huge gash running down your chest!" Her hair swung wildly about as she grew more agitated and waved her hands around. Seifer had a vague thought that she resembled Chicken wuss in this particular moment. Then his thoughts wavered when he felt her hands again. He tried to shake his head at her, but pain flared when he moved his neck and he immediately grew limp again. The teeth marks of the giant monster were sunk into his skin just above his navel and on the upper part of his chest. One flat male nipple had been nicked, and it oozed blood, as all the cuts and punctures did. Elly whisked off her training uniform and cast a small water spell, wetting the cloth. She cleaned all the wounds she could see on his stomach and chest in silence. It seemed they were alone in the secret area. No one else had been lucky enough to get this far. They could rest for as long as they needed until they had enough strength to journey back.

Seifer finally closed his eyes and relaxed as she gently daubed the blood and dirt off him. It hurt to have someone touching those cuts, but she was gentle and the cloth cool. He gasped a little when he felt a light pat on his cheek, and opened his eyes to stare directly into her ice-blue ones. Her gaze was unnerving, a blunt look - almost a challenge. Irvine was saying something, and he tore his attention away from his contemplation of her eyes to the battered cowboy.

"Well, we can split the one cure spell we have," he was saying quietly. "It'll be enough if we can rest ...for a time."

"We have time," Elly said drily. "No one knows we're here, and no one was able to get this far yet." She concentrated and then spread her hands over at both of the men, casting a half-cure spell at each. A light thrill ran through Seifer's body as the spell took its effect. He swallowed hard when the it ran down the wound on his inner thigh, however. She hadn't cleaned it, and that complicated matters somewhat. Irvine was sighing with relief.

"Much obliged, my lady." He even went so far as to tip his hat, a sure sign he was feeling better. "I owe you one - maybe we can settle the score Sunday evening?"

"Now I know you're all right," Elly said blandly. "Thanks, but ah...Seifer?" She turned back to the older boy, who hadn't been able to suppress a moan.

"Nothing." He stared defiantly at her but his penetrating gaze, which always worked so well, failed again.

"Shut up and let me look." She ran a light hand down his chest past the healing wounds and grasped his belt buckle. Seifer exhaled sharply, blue eyes widening.

"Oh, my. If y'all just want to be alone, I'll move over here..." A faint chuckle came from the far end of the room.

"Kinneas! Stop laughing or I'll make you wish that d@mned 'Rex had gutted you on the field!" He shook his fist feebly at the snickering brunette. Elly had worked the buckle off in the meantime, and was gently tugging on the pants.

"I'll just..." Irvine tilted his hat back over his eyes and turned his lanky back on them both, his side resting against the wall.

"I'm fine," Seifer tried to growl, but the words he spoke seemed not his own. They sounded faint and weak. He grimaced at the sound of his own voice. Elly slapped his hand away, her fingers lightly brushing the sore slash. Seifer winced.

"See? You're not," she rebuked him. "You're hurt, and I don't care - I have to clean this or it's going to take forever to heal, spell or no spell." She rinsed her ragged jacket again and began to blot gently. He was too tired at the moment to further resist. In fact, he had to privately admit that he was feeling better as she finished cleaning that last big cut. He was soon laying on his back, oblivious to the fact that his torn pants were down around his ankles.

"...well built," Elly said.

"What?" Seifer was wide awake in a moment. "What did you say?"

"I said, you're, ah, very well built," she said shyly. He glanced at her and saw to his amazement that was blushing hard. It made her pale features stand out all the more, with the lone color on her face those twin patches of red on her cheeks. He couldn't think of anything to say. The faint early sunlight stained the small open area with a soft light. It fell upon her and to Seifer's bemused eyes, she looked like she was glowing. He watched her wring her jacket out and settle next to him. She was like his very own guardian angel. Realizing what he had just thought, he struggled, trying to force some anger up. It certainly would be a lot easier if he had to deal with a known emotion, rather than the one that was tugging at him now. He felt confused. The image of the angel stuck with him as she reached out towards him. Her fingertips lightly grazed the old scar across the bridge of his nose, sliding down to caress his cheek. He blinked with surprise.

"You know, you wear this scar well." She murmured. Seifer reached up and grasped her hand. He had discarded his gloves awhile back, and his hand was warm and strangely smooth for a soldier-to-be.

The gloves must account for that, she thought vaguely.

"Thank you," he said gravely. Gently, so as not to frighten her, he moved her hand away from his face until it was resting by her side again. He was alarmed to see her reaction. Elly's face was flaming, and small tears stood in the corners of her eyes as if she'd realized she'd said something wrong. She cleared her throat and whipped her head to the side.

"You know, Irvine, I guess I could maybe go wi-" Elly called out crisply, turning to the long-haired young man. Irvine raised the brim of his hat. When she trembled beside him he knew: she was doing this because she thought he'd rejected her. Seifer understood rejection. His heart beat faster in his chest and he opened his mouth.

"...not possibly go out on Sunday," Seifer finished for her. Elly jumped at the sound of Seifer's voice. It was very firm and commanding: his disciplinary tone. A slow, langorious smile spread across the sharpshooter's lightly tanned features when he heard his companion.

"Oh?" Was all he said. He raised a long eyebrow at Seifer.

"You have a problem with that, Kinneas?" Seifer growled. Inwardly, his stomach felt a trifle queasy. She wasn't like the assorted lapdog girls that cluttered the Garden's hallways, especially like the ones Kinneas always had surrounding him. He grimaced inwardly. She wouldn't be told what to do, and he didn't know how this would end up. She stood and placed her hands on her hips. Seifer waited. If she decided on the other young man he could do nothing.

"What?" Baffled, the object of their little discussion stepped between and into their line of view. Her long locks swayed down, almost obscuring her puzzled blue eyes. Seifer stared, amazed at how long her hair was when she pulled it out of that stupid pigtail.

"Well, if you would be with that thin pile of cowskin than me..." He leaned back against the wall across from Irvine.

"Was that a half-assed attempt to ask me out?" She asked wonderingly. Irvine snorted laughter, and Seifer slapped a palm to his face.

"Shit," he gritted through clenched teeth.

"Two good-looking guys want to go out with me?" Elly seemed baffled. Seifer actually blushed.

"Good looking?"

"Naturally." Irvine sniffed. He winked slyly at Seifer and mouthed 'watch this!' "Elly, sweetheart..." He walked over and slipped an arm around her. "...you looked incredibly gorgeous out there, and not only that," he added, "You saved both our lives." She backed away from the smooth-talking cowboy and frowned at him, eyes narrowing.

"You don't need any dates, Kinneas. I've seen your little harem of girls." Seifer had to laugh. He did it as quietly as he could - it hurt his belly -- but Irvine heard, and he scowled at him. He didn't look half as pretty when those full lips were peeled back in a snarl. Elly moved back to Seifer's side and slipped an arm around him.

"Are you a little better now?" She asked, concerned.

"Much," he murmured. "Um. Thanks. But don't noise this around so much, all right?" A thought struck him. "And don't tell Chicken wuss that I got this badly hurt by that f#cking 'Rexaur." He regretted the words the instant they were out of his mouth. A mention of Zell and she dropped her hand from his side in a moment, a gentle smile touching her lips. Seifer stared longingly at them, wishing he could make her smile like that. The tattooed freak had a secret admirer that really wasn't so secret. And he didn't even do anything about it! He ground his teeth in frustration. It was all so unfair.

"Zell!" she exclaimed. Seifer jerked and then swore fluidly.

Oh, this was even more unfair. His unknowing rival had just entered the room. The slender martial artist was wearing his usual: skater-style baggy shorts with his strapped black shirt and jacket with blue flames etched on the red sleeves. His best metal knuckles were on, and they gleamed in the sunlight as he whipped his fists through the air excitedly.

"The he11 happened here?" He exclaimed, bounding further inside. Elly moved over to him in a moment, her eyes starry and absolutely devoid of thought. Irvine shook his head and pantomimed sticking a gun in his mouth. He pulled the "trigger" when she sighed dreamily. For once Seifer agreed with the lean cowboy. He nodded curtly at him, then drew his best defensive wall up around his emotions.

Which lasted about two seconds. Not bad. A new record.

"Where's your help, Chicken wuss?" Seifer snorted. "I know you couldn't have fought all the monsters yourself out there." He seethed inwardly. She had almost been thinking about a date with him. She was attracted to him; he knew that. It was Zell Dincht that got in the way...always in the way!

"What did you call me?!" Zell drew himself up, trembling with rage. "I told you not to call me that again, asshole!" Elly stood between both boys, her eyes wide. Seifer chanced a quick look at her and then decided he would poke the younger boy again. Just to make her realize how little he thought of her. Seifer really believed Zell cared less for the girl than his hoverboard. It was obvious to everyone that he hadn't a clue of her feelings for him, anyway.

Maybe she'll give him up and go with me if she sees that, he thought, and smiled dangerously at the fists that were flying inches away from his face. Zell stopped throwing punches and raised an eyebrow. "Could you excuse me a minute, Chicken wuss?" He bent and retrieved his pants, which were puddled around his ankles. The martial artist's eyes widened as he watched him pull them up. Elly's face grew bright red as she imagined what Zell could be thinking. Her mouth opened...then closed. Finally she pointed at Seifer with a shaking finger.

"They both got hurt and I had the spells to..."

"Much better," Seifer yawned, stretching. He deliberately ignored the flaring pain when he moved and walked as casually as he could to Zell's side.

"What's...?" Zell looked to Irvine for an answer. The sharpshooter was shaking his head in disgust.

"Seifer, man, that's really not cool," he murmured. He popped the ten gallon hat he wore up with one finger. "You know that's..."

"What the fuck was going on here?" Zell blurted.

"Your girlfriend was just tending my wounds," he said calmly. He ran a hand through his hair and raised his eyebrows innocently.

"Girlfriend?" Zell stared stupidly at Elly. Her eyes were even wider, her face mortified. "She's not my..." Seifer smirked when he saw her face fall. They hadn't gotten that far yet, obviously. And maybe wouldn't ever if he kept at it like this. Besides, he would be better for her than Chicken wuss anyway. He hadn't counted on her reaction, however. Irvine was faster than any of them and saw the impending flight in her eyes before she even moved.

"Don't!" He shouted quickly. He lunged at Elly, but it was too late. She darted out the door out into the dangerous training area.

- -

"Are you proud of that, Seifer?" Irvine spat in the general direction of his feet. "You're sick, man."

"What?"

"Where'd she go?" Zell scratched at the back of his neck. "The frig's with that, Seifer? You know I'm not seein' anyone. Had to go to that dance last month by myself." He stared at the back of the massive door in wonder. "And you busted up on me for it."

"Get her!" Seifer yelled. "Out! Quick!" He turned to move and pain bloomed in his wounded thigh. He clutched at it, falling to his knee and grimacing.

"We fought one of the toughest T-Rexaurs I've ever seen," Irvine explained to Zell. He pointed at Seifer. "She cured us with a lesser spell." He poked Seifer with his boot, causing him to fall down all the way. The bigger boy grunted and only managed to get partially up. "You ungrateful bastard. She was hurt too, you know. She's not in the condition to fight anything now." He limped to the door and opened it. "Especially since she didn't use any of the cure on herself." He shouldered his gun and walked out, letting the door slam behind him.

"Elly?" Zell said.

"C'mon, Chicken wuss! Move!" Seifer groaned. "She's gonna get hurt!"

Outside in the lush, overgrown training area, Elly pelted off as hard and fast as she could, rushing for the main doors. She ran blindly, sobbing as she went, not caring about the branches and vines that stung her neck, face and legs. Thus it was that the sudden growl that broke the stillness of the center caused her to start violently. Bleeding from various thorn scratches and dazed with anger and shame, she turned around and faced the monsters that were about to attack her. She quickly counted seven grats - plantlike creatures that used status abnormalities in their attacks. Elly raised a hand to quickly shield herself from their magic, but four tendrils snaked out from every side and knocked her sprawling on the moss. She struggled to get to her feet, but yet another cast sleep at her. She blacked out, one hand clutching at the ground, lying facedown in the thick carpet of moss.

"You want an ass kickin' don't you!" the massive shout echoed throughout the center. Zell quite literally flew through the air and landed on one of the grats, knocking it down. He kicked at it and then flipped backwards over to where Elly lay. "Wha? Hey, wake up! This ain't the time for a nap!"

"Zell - you have any esunas?" Irvine appeared, squeezing off a bullet at one of the creatures. He barely dodged a whipping vine and half ran over to where the tattooed young blonde crouched.

"As if. I used em all up getting here." Zell shrugged. "Watch your back!" He jumped up and punched another vine away. "Can't leave her. They'll attack until she's dead." He pulled the sleeping girl into his arms. Irvine snapped several shots off, killing one of the beasts. The others creeped slightly back, as if pondering their next move.

"Hurry up, Zell! They're thinking this over..!"

"I ain't gonna let her get hurt any more!" Zell frowned and lifted her up all the way, standing with her propped against his side.

"Neither am I!" Seifer suddenly appeared, swinging his gunblade ferociously. He swung at the tendrils blocking his way, pointing at Zell his free hand. "Summon your GF, ass! Clear these and then we can make it!"

"Won't work. I had to use him too much...before," Zell admitted sheepishly.

That was an understatement, young master, Quezacotl moaned inside his head.

"He just confirmed that," the tattooed boy grunted.

"No GF's, no good magic, one down and two almost out of it," Irvine grumbled. "Just grab onto me and we'll all run!"

"Fuck," Seifer stated blandly. He didn't want Kinneas helping him, but didn't see any other way. He made his way over as fast as he could and they all ran for the door. The grats tried to follow, but Zell blocked any of the attacks their way until the main doors closed after them. All three boys heard several thumps on the back of the heavy metal. They stared at each other.

"Close," Irvine said sagely.

"Wake up!" Zell was shaking Elly gently. "Why'd you run out like that anyway?!" Irvine shook his head.

"That's Seifer's fault." He looked around for the young man, but he had slunk quickly out the hall, most likely heading for the infirmary.

"Seifer's a moron," Zell growled. He slung the girl around so he held her in his arms instead of on his hip. Her brown locks hung limply down away from her pale face. "Why'd you take the library girl with ya?" He asked curiously as they followed in Seifer's tracks. Irvine watched Zell closely. He was wiping some of the blood from her face away with a careful finger. She had thin cuts running across her face from the thorny vines.

"She's a good fighter."

"I never fought with her before." Zell shrugged.

"Well, has she ever even talked with you?"

"A little. Oh, and one of her girlfriends asked me like, a bunch of questions a few days ago." Zell stepped through the last door. Irvine followed and they were finally out of the Training Center completely. Students bustled by, staring curiously at them. "Do not go in there," Zell told a hulking young brute and his girl all ready to rush inside. "It ain't worth it."

"A bunch of questions?" Irvine covered a smile with the back of his hand.

"What I like to eat, my favorite colors an' stuff like that."

"Zell," Irvine sighed, "Didn't you find that odd?"

"Nah - errr -- hey, why? Should I have?" Those innocent hazel eyes focused in on the cowboy. Irvine burst out in laughing.

"She wants you, man!" He managed to choke through the laughter. "It's classic!"

"You would know." Zell rolled his eyes. "Mister 'I have a date every second'."

"Listen. The girlfriend getting all the info, the way she's always around you..."

"She does show up a lot, huh." Zell started to think about it.

"...she always stares at you..."

"Huh?!"

"Yeah, man."

"That was that her crying in the...?" Zell's lower lip pushed out in a thoughtful kind of pout. When he had rushed out of the door to step back out in the training area, he had heard the sound of someone sobbing. He hadn't given it a second thought until now. Irvine nodded.

"I'm just guessing. But look at her, Zell." He pointed at her eyes. Trails of wetness still gleamed on her pale cheeks. Zell's face blanched.

"I didn't, I mean, ack! How was I supposed to know?" He stepped back when she stirred in his arms. "She's wakin' up! Irvine!"

"Don't look so scared!" Irvine laughed. "You never had a girl before?"

"No!" Zell hissed. "What do I do, man? Help me! Quick!"

"You like her, Zell?"

"I think she's a babe! But how do I...!"

"Z - Zell?" Elly husked quietly. She peered about and found herself in his arms, held securely against his body. "Huh? Oh. Dreaming." She snuggled against the martial artist's chest and curled her arms around his neck, sighing wistfully. Her eyes closed again.

"Sleeping?" Zell had to bend to whisper in her ear. "No way! You're wide awake." Her ice-blue eyes snapped open immediately and her arms jerked away from his neck.

"Aaaaah!" She yelped. Zell almost dropped her in surprise, but he held onto the scared girl. That helped him, anyway. He saw she was as frightened as he was or maybe more. Irvine had hobbled his way the last few feet over to the Infirmary in the meantime. He shook his head laughingly at them just before he walked inside.

"Have fun, kids," he teased.

Both Zell and Elly ignored him.

"Unnh...ow. Zell, my head hurts." Elly whimpered a little and he saw with alarm that the grats had left one of their tendrils leeched onto her right temple. He quickly ran into the Infirmary.

- -

A short while later, he was carrying a sleeping Elly out of the Doc's offices. Her arms were wrapped trustingly around his neck. Zell walked steadily, although each glance from his fellow students had him turning a darker shade of pink. He saw Irvine waiting for him in the hall and flashed him a fanged grin.

"Irvine!"

"She all right?" The cowboy tipped his hat, peering closely at the pale girl's face. Zell nodded happily.

"Doc said yeah." He hugged her a little, then shyly glanced up at the sharpshooter. Irvine was chuckling.

"I guess this means you know what to do, huh?"

"Oh yeah."

The young men stared at each other for a brief span of time. Irvine winked slyly at the tattooed boy.

"Just don't let the sentinels catch you at it," he whispered.

"Kinneas!" Zell stumbled in shock. Irvine laughed, clapped a hand to Zell's back in lieu of goodbye and sauntered away.

"Geez, to think I'd really take advantage of her. 'Sup with that? That's like, Seifer - not me." Zell mumbled to himself. He checked the card the doctor had given him with her room number on it. "Here we are." Gently, so as not to disturb her, he placed her hand on the panel and the doors opened. Elly stirred in his arms as he walked slowly inside. Zell laid her on the bed and then turned to leave - but he noticed something on her desk. Moving quietly he stepped over and picked the piece of paper up. It was a photograph, actually - a classroom shot he barely remembered posing for. He hadn't even realized it had been her that had taken it.

But there he was caught on film, running a hand through his hair and grinning wildly. His sharp canines peeked out through his smile, and he was giving a thumb's-up at the photographer.

"Sexy," a husky voice whispered from behind him. Zell jumped, dropping the photo.

"El?!"

"Well, that's what you look like," she shrugged fluidly. She was curled on her side on the bed, blinking at him sleepily. He could see she thought she was dreaming and he shook his head, raising his hand to her.

"Uhhh, Els, yer awake..."

"You just don't get it, do you? No, no, shut up - this time I'm gonna do somethin' about it before I wake up." She got up and threw her arms around him. Zell tried to speak but she touched the tattoo on the side of his face with her fingertips. He froze, hazel eyes widening. Something about her light touch...it was maddening to his senses. The blonde boy's eyes closed and he leaned his head to the side, closer to her hand. She responded by cupping his cheek and rubbing it gently.

"I always wanted to kiss this tattoo." She stood on her toes and placed her lips on his skin. Zell stooped so she could have better access, sighing lustily when she kissed a tight little outline of the tribal-like mark. When she finally released him, he set his teeth and gulped.

"You're awake," he told her firmly. "Snap out of it, Els. Ya gotta believe me, yo." He slipped his arms low around her waist and bucked gently against her, bringing her into contact with his body.

"What?!"

"Yeah?" he murmured.

"Oh my god, oh my god." Elly's face burned wildly. "I didn't mean to, uh..."

"Nah, it's okay. Really. I guess I sorta knew ya felt that way."

"It's not okay!"

"Wha? Whaddaya mean it's not? Don't ya like me?" Zell reached out and gathered her in his arms when she would have run away. "I'm just sorta nervous 'round ya. That's all."

"You're nervous!"

"Yeah..."

"Well, I'm petrified!" She twisted in his grip but he just stared down at her. "I'm not supposed to tell you! You - well, you were supposed to ask me out." Her blush deepened, but she went grimly on. "You never had a clue, Zell? I tried everything." He swore vociferously. Elly blinked at his use of language, but he was suddenly sliding his arms around her lower waist and kissing her neck. She moaned softly.

"What? Zell?"

"I get it, I get it!" he muttered. "Now I'm gonna do somethin' about it." He kissed her lips and she froze in place.

Zell was an impulsive young man. He'd always been, and now that he knew how she felt about him, he was throwing caution completely to the winds. He'd almost lost her today, and he didn't ever want to repeat that experience again.

"What are you doing?!"

"Shut up an' enjoy it," He grinned. His sharp canines flashed into view and she smiled. "I know I haven't told ya that I liked you, Els...but I do." He nipped her below the jawline and then grinned a little more shyly. "We're always apart and goin' on dangerous missions and stuff," he struggled to explain. "I don't wanna..."

"Whaaat?"

"C'mere an' shut it," he growled lowly. His gloved hands grasped the top of her head, gripping her hair in his fingers. Someone at the Infirmary had redid her hair, he noticed. He only to apply needed slight pressure to tilt her face towards his, as his other hand pulled her hair out of the new pigtail.

"Zell!"

"I toldya to shut it." His lips touched hers and she gasped. Zell flicked his tongue out and stabbed delicately, entering her mouth for a sweet kiss. Elly swooned against him, closing her eyes and letting him take the lead. The martial artist drew back a little bit, but she followed as if drawn to him. Zell sighed, opening his eyes to stare at her as their tongues played gently against each other. Her face was flushed and small teardrops stood at the corners of her eyes. The dark brown hair he had just pulled free hung down her back, but two little strands curled cutely down by her ears. He fingered one wonderingly as they continued to kiss. Elly reached up with a shaking, nervous hand and touched his spiky bangs.

"Mmm!"

"Mmhhh?"

"What do you use in that hair? It's a stiff as a rock!"

"That's not the only..."

"ZELL!"

He chuckled.

"Here, let me show you something..." His hand grasped hers and led it down to his chest. Their eyes met and continued to hold as he trailed her fingers down his tight black tank top. She thrust her hand down with the intent to take his jacket off, and he giggled. "Hey! Watch it - I'm ticklish."

"That's really kind of sweet, you know?" Elly breathed. "...everywhere?" she asked laughingly.

"I dunno." Zell's hazel eyes widened.

"Well, let me take this off." With Zell's help she wriggled the leather jacket off of him, staring closely at it. Black sleeves with blue flames etched along the sides, red leather on the front. She sighed. Never had she thought she'd be getting this close to it. He grinned as she hugged it impulsively.

"That's better," he sighed. His arms drew her close again. Elly was fingering the odd straps on his tank top. It was more like a muscle shirt, with ribbing on the chest and metal buckles on the straps. A small metal plate was sewn across the front, no more than a finger's length and width in size. This whole interesting tank was tucked into his baggy denim shorts. He wore them skater-style, several sizes too large, and they were held securely in place by a black leather belt. A pleasant little thrill ran down her back as she wondered what kind of underwear he wore.

"What'cha thinkin' about, beautiful?" Zell's laughing voice broke her reverie. Elly stepped back and held her arms out to him.

"Pick me up again?" She asked shyly. He bent and scooped her in his arms quite easily. She giggled girlishly with sheer delight. Zell pressed his mouth against her throat as he carried her over to her own bed.

"You need your rest, y'know," he coughed uncomfortably.

"Yes, but..."

"I - I'll stay if ya want."

Her answering smile was like the sun coming up.

"Yeah," she agreed. "I want."

"But, rest ya hear? Doc told me y'need all the rest you - you can, uh..." He trailed off as she pulled him down with her and snuggled up against him. "...get," he finished lamely.

"Zell?"

"Wha?"

"What was it you wanted to show me before?" Elly let out a sleepy little yawn. The young man took her hand and curled it against his chest, holding it against his heart.

"Somethin' like this, girl," he whispered. "Just somethin' like this."

Gentleman's School

"Gentleman's School"

orig. 9/20/2017
One Piece - Zoro x Elly, PG-13
.
.
.

The sunlight beating down on his tanned skin was warm, almost hot. Zoro had decided to take a nap after working out on the beach but he kept getting distracted...

The towel he'd placed underneath him wasn't enough protection against the sand slowly creeping over it. The grains were gritty against his legs and back, just enough to keep him at the edge of sleep.

Or so he convinced himself.

The real reason he couldn't doze off like he normally could was that the stupid cook was fawning over the stupid cat. Zoro frowned and deliberately turned to one side so he couldn't peer through slitted eyes to watch. The red-haired wench was off shopping at the local town and the other was off doing something quiet, which couldn't be said for the rest of them. The two were the only ones on the beach beside him though as the others were still playing in the ocean. His frown grew harder, his brow furrowing more and more as he listened.

When Sanji asked if she wanted help with her suntan lotion, however, he snapped. In one smooth leap he was on his feet, boiling with rage. He snarled at the blond haired young man as he stalked over to where they were, grabbed Elly's wrist and yanked her away.

"What's wrong with you, asshole," she hissed at her captor, her eyes cold and hard. "Quit pulling on me."

"Get over here," He didn't think; just swept her into his arms to get her away from the others faster. Her body tensed rigidly for a brief moment.

The idiot! How dare he! Her thoughts were acidic as she glared up at the big man. His jaw was set, dark eyes staring straight ahead as he walked purposefully out into the playful wavelets to the huge gangplank. Yet even though he looked oddly resentful Elly knew he wouldn't harm her. During the long walk back to wherever he was taking her she gradually relaxed. He despised Sanji's antics in general so maybe that was why he had lashed out. She ignored the fact that he never cared when the cook catered to any other woman.

He grunted when he put her down on the main deck.

"Now what was that all about?" She raised her chin, lavender side locks whipping about her cheeks in the warm breeze. Zoro glanced aside with a scowl.

"Don't ."

"Excuse me?"

"I said you know better than that."

"What? I'm not allowed to be treated like the other girls?" Her biting reply announced that she thought the opposite.

He blinked. "...you like that bullshit?!"

"Every woman likes to be treated like she's beautiful sometimes!" She lashed out and struck him lightly across the chest with her palm. The slap was meant to be ineffectual; she knew she wouldn't hurt him if she tried. It was the gesture that counted and he backed away looking even more puzzled.

The sting of tears pricked her eyes. "No one ever treated me like that before. He never even does because he's always after them and I'm always wearing fur!" To put it bluntly, Elly now felt depressed. She had a light crush on the lecherous cook and his attentions had been boosting her ego. She'd begun to think that maybe she wasn't hideous in this pale, naked human form after all. The girls assured her she wasn't yet the men's attention - or lack of it -- confirmed her suspicions. Her body was thicker in general than the others and she had a proportional bust instead of one that looked like two giant watermelons perched precariously on top of a twig. Her hair wasn't long or lustrous and she was usually in her cat form because she was more comfortable in it.

The swordsman stood dumbfounded as she changed form and bounded away to hide in the bowels of the ship. When her tail tips had disappeared into the open door that stood at the end of the deck Zoro spun, his hand on the hilts of his swords. Sanji was leaning against the railing, a cigarette casually held between his long fingers.

"You, my friend, are a complete idiot." He raised the cigarette and took a long, calm drag. "Nice work."

"Not my fault," Zoro snarled between clenched teeth.

"You're dumber than I thought you were if you really believe that." His leg snapped up, absently blocking the blades aimed at him.

"Also not my fault that you're obsessed with girls." Zoro reluctantly sheathed his katana and glared harder at the cocky young man.

"Have you ever seen her cry?" Sanji's blunt question startled the big man.

"Of course not!" He waved his hand curtly through the air. "She doesn't do any of that nonsense."

"You might want to readjust your thinking. She's human ..." He paused at Zoro's snort. "Don't give me that. Chopper's human enough for all of us and he can't even turn all the way like she can. The point is that she likes you. You can hurt her."

"What the hell do you mean?"

"Fuck, she's got crappy taste in men." Sanji rolled his visible eye skyward and sighed. "Just go and see if you upset her or not. I'll be willing to admit defeat if she's not curled up someplace crying."

This was enough reason for Zoro to try and the blond man watched with some amusement as he stomped away. He came back not ten minutes later with a sour expression on his tanned features.

"How do I make it better?" He asked sullenly.

"I thought you'd never ask."

- -

It was obvious to Sanji that it would take something like a miracle to turn the grumpy, callous swordsman into anything resembling a gentleman. At first he resisted any attempt to teach him the soft, flattering words that came so naturally to the cook when he spoke to any lady.

He finally resorted to threats. "Do it or you'll fail. Look, it's not bullshitting them if you believe it, all right?"

"It's a bunch of..." What Zoro described doesn't bear repeating but it was quite colorful. The green haired young man was dressed in something different than what he usually wore. He sat with one leg cocked over the other, seemingly nonchalant but obviously uncomfortable. His shirt that day was of finely spun dark gray silk, open at the front, with slightly faded jeans in a darker hue. His gold earrings had given way to silver ones and he'd even gone so far as to discard his usual haramaki.

Sanji ran a hand through his sweep of golden hair and grimaced. "Give, idiot. I've seen you staring at her. Besides, why were you so pissed the other day? You like her, tell her. That's it. Tell her what you like about her. I'm just giving you little tips. Compliment her hair, her eyes, what she's wearing that day - ladies like to hear that. Try it, say something you like about her right now. Go." He knew he was pressing his luck but the other man was strangely meek, considering...

Zoro mumbled something.

"What?"

"I said - " He swore briefly, "she smells good." He looked profoundly embarrassed when he'd admitted this as if he'd said something silly. Sanji nodded though.

"Just practice. If you can say them out loud you can say them to her."

"Why do I have to say them while you're around though?" He thrust his jaw out pugnaciously at the smaller man.

"Because," Sanji said patiently, "if you say these things to her in public other people might hear. You have to be able to do it without choking on your food."

"Food?"

"You were planning on taking her out someplace to eat, right?"

"Take stupid cat out? On a ...?"

"Date. Yes. You'd better knock off that 'stupid' business while you're at it. Don't you ever call her by her name?"

"No." Zoro frowned.

"Never?"

"I said no, didn't I?"

"Well..." Sanji groped for an idea. "Just drop the 'stupid' part and it'll be fine, I guess. But you could call her something nicer." Zoro grunted and unfolded his legs from on top of the table they rersted on. He stood, wrenched his shoulders back in a vigorous stretch and grimaced at the crackling sound that emanated from his neck.

"I'll do it."

"Wait!" Sanji rushed forward before he could burst out the door. "Here, give her this when you do." He pressed a flower into the bigger man's rouugh palm.

"...you serious?"

"Just do it. Trust me."

He found her resting in one of the common rooms on the ship with an unread book laying beside her on a low divan. Zoro peered around first to make sure they were alone, then cleared his throat.

"What." Her tone was flat. She didn't bother to look at him but continued to stare morosely at the far wall.

"We're staying here for awhile," he began lamely. He knew what his plan of attack was but this was a different battleground. Zoro much preferred swords and oceans of blood to this awkward, blushing advance. He scowled at himself then sat down next to her. "You want to go out to eat? In town?"

She slowly turned her head to face him. "You said what?" She hadn't been paying attention and she struggled back to focus.

"Do you want to go out to eat tonight." He leaned closer, blushing but determined.

"Ah..." Elly was startled to find him inches away holding a sprig of lavender up before her eyes. It was her favorite flower.

"Say yes," he said firmly.

She blinked. "What's going on?" He was acting so different that she could tell something was up. But the warmth from his body and the familiar scent of her favorite flower mixed with the sharp tang of steel lulled her into a dreamy, vacant-eyed state. Zoro was amazed at how fast the silly tactics he'd been taught worked. He began to feel more confident again and the flush on his cheeks drew back from red to light pink.

"Do you want to go out with me or not?" He raised an eyebrow.

"Yes, but..."

"I'll come get you later tonight," he said as he tucked the flower cluster into her hair. "Eight."

"That late?" She stammered a little and cursed herself for doing so; he saw her wince. Zoro smiled and she grew even more flustered.

"Make sure you're ready," was all he said before leaving.

"That was all he said?" Nami shook her head in disbelief.

"He doesn't waste words," Robin murmured. She watched with a gentle smile as Elly burst out of her bathroom again. The girls had all gathered together to offer advice and calm their nervous friend. They were currently helping her choose an outfit.

"What about this one?" She spun about girlishly, causing the dark green dress to flare about her legs. It had a light scattering of sequins on the bodice and was mid-thigh length.

"It's nice," Nami said dubiously.

"What's wrong with this one?" Elly demanded. "Wait, I know - it's too reserved for your taste."

"You might have to hit him over the head," the orange-haired girl said dryly. "He hasn't seemed interested in girls before."

"I disagree," Robin said, stretching. "That looks nice on her. Plus it matches his favorite colors. He'll wear green. They'll look good together."

"There's what I'm concerned about," Elly said worriedly. "He's just doing this to apologize out of some code of honor or something. He doesn't care about me that way."

"He's yelled at me a thousand times," Nami said wryly, "and never asked me out."

"He's just doing it because he thinks he has to," the plumper girl asserted.

"Ask him if you're so concerned," Robin suggested mildly. "But since it's almost time, we'd better get going..."

"Erk."

Nami winked at her. "You're so sure he's not serious! I'd be prepared for anything if I were you."

"What?"

Robin chuckled under her breath and dragged her away before Elly could comment further. They left just in time, for it was only minutes before there was a light, almost diffident tap on her door. He was wearing some green as Robin had predicted; he had on a dark charcoal jacket and pants with his typical haramaki. He had decided not to leave his swords behind as Sanji had delicately suggested but the green looked like a cummerbund and didn't detract from the outfit. He wore no tie and the first couple of buttons on his shirt were open.

They both hesitated when they saw each other.

Then he cleared his throat. "Ready?"

"Yes." She walked out, setting her heels firmly on the wooden decking as if reassured by the clacking sounds her heels made. She stopped after a few steps, however, when his hand touched her arm. Elly paused, uncertain of what he wanted and nearly choked when he slipped his arm about hers.

It was a silent stroll to the restaurant where he'd reserved a table. They kept glancing at each other nervously, neither one sure of what to say. Zoro's head was filled with the ideas Sanji had given him but every time he opened his mouth to say something it felt fake and he clamped his lips shut.

Needless to say he pretty much flubbed the entire evening.

It was somehow rewarding to see the big man flounder around so desperately, Sanji mused as he watched from his vantage point at a table hidden in the shadows. The fact remained that the poor girl was convinced this was only a half-hearted effort to make up for something. He sighed and left before they did, his mind racing.

Zoro was not very happy. When he set out to accomplish a task he always finished. He wasn't satisfied with halfway measures and he firmly believed that he was incapable of "losing" in any area as long as he tried his damndest. But try though he might, he couldn't flatter and cater to this dark-haired woman that had shot into his life like a furry comet. The words the idiot cook had wanted him to say were somehow there, he just couldn't voice them. When he finally did speak it always ended up sounding wrong. Angry more with himself than anything, he gently took her by the arm again to lead her back to the ship.

Elly was quiet on the walk back. She had dreamed of this but it wasn't what she thought it would be. Even though she was sure he was only apologizing, however, dinner had been bittersweet. She'd tried not to stare at him in his finery that made him even more handsome than she'd thought possible. She'd struggled to not cling to him when he offered her his arm on both trips to and from the shore. What she really wanted to do was wrap her arms tightly around his body and bury her head in that strong chest. Instead she walked sedately by his side, thanking him with a smile when they reached the gangplank.

"Such an early night for a date," Sanji remarked casually, stepping out of the shadows alongside the ship. Zoro blinked at him.

"Well, dinner's done," Elly shrugged with a weak smile that made the blond man's heart ache. "What else is there to do, right?"

"A walk on the beach, maybe? Under the half-full moon?" He sighed and held out his hand while Zoro choked. He glared at the chef, his teeth bared in a frightening scowl. Sanji rolled his visible eye and turned his back on the swordsman, tugging gently so she joined him.

"Oh, why not," she sighed hopelessly. She bent, removed her shoes and laid them by the wooden walkway back to the ship. The two walked off along the cool, wet sand with the crashing of the ocean accompanying their small talk. Some distance away from where they'd begun, Sanji paused.

"He really does like you, you know," he murmured. He slipped an arm about her shoulders.

"Yes. We're friends."

"No." Sanji laughed. "No, beautiful, not that way. He's nearly throwing those big dumb knives of his at my back for taking you away from him. He would do this with you, but he's not good at romance."

"But..."

"Cook!" They both turned in surprise to find the big man standing behind them with his fists clenched. His face was mottled with anger. "Quit touching my girl!"

Elly's eyes went wide and she nearly fell to the sand under her feet. Sanji prudently stepped clear as she wobbled and Zoro caught her deftly about the waist. The slender young man stepped backwards as he shook one fist at him.

"What just happened?" She gasped. Her cheeks were stained a light pink from nervousness and he immediately forgot his treacherous crewmate and turned his attention to her instead.

"You almost fell," he mumbled.

"Oh." She gulped. "Um. Thanks." It was hard to formulate sentences when he held her lightly against his side. She could feel his big hand grasping her midsection.

"You want help there?" The other man raised a curly eyebrow.

"No," Zoro said. "I told you, back off." His arm slipped more possessively around her waist and she flinched slightly, then relaxed.

"What was that?" Sanji asked pleasantly.

"I said she's with me, not you." He turned her with him and walked off down the beach.

"You were jealous that day," she marveled. Zoro grunted sourly.

"Just irritated," he said shortly. "If you wanted attention you should have said something."

"To you? Oh, that would have been pleasant. You're always 'stupid cat' this and 'stupid cat' that."

He took a deep breath. He was not going to screw up again. His nervousness dissipated when he viewed the scenario more like a battle and he steeled himself to win no matter what.

"I'm me," he rumbled in a low tone. "That's how I am. Do you know who you are?" He paused to let that sink in, then leaned even closer so their noses were almost touching. She looked decidedly cute with her huge eyes trained on his lips so deliberately close to her own. He started to shake the thought off instinctively, then stopped.

He told her instead.

Elly blinked. "Wh - what?"

"Your eyes are pretty."

"Was this a dare or something?" Her voice shook; she whispered so low that he almost couldn't hear her.

"...and you're scared." He reached up and gently touched her cheek. "Not a stupid cat right now. More like ..." He paused. "A kitten."

"Zoro." He hushed her and she snapped her mouth closed, amazed.

"Kitten," he murmured softly, his hands coming up to caress her hair.

Sanji's grin grew into a self-satisfied smirk as he watched the silhouettes draw closer together near the frothing water. Not only had he made her happy now but that idiot owed him big time.
