New Years Resolution

Shota/Els

_

The party was in high gear, with laughter and sparkling conversation everywhere mixing with the sounds of merrily clinking glasses. Aizawa glanced around the room from his safe place on the end of the banquet table. He had holed up near the coffee, a drink no one wanted to touch.

Ah, there was his idiot friend. Mic was in the middle of the room trying to balance a bowl of dip on his head - god only knew why, though he was completely wasted and that may have been the only underlying factor. Several of his colleagues were cheering him on. He sighed wearily. One more event he wasn't allowed to skip. It just meant several hours wasted sitting in a chair and avoiding everyone he could until he was allowed to leave.

"Is that coffee fresh?"

He jumped at the sound of her voice. It was the woman with cat ears and a tail, the one he admitted to himself he was mildly interested in. The newest addition to the staff here at UA, she had become the student counselor. He rather liked the fact that she was willing to substitute for anyone at a moment's notice. He pulled himself together and grunted with a curt gesture at the brown liquid.

"I wouldn't recommend it. The coffee's mostly for show, here."

"Ah, damn it. I don't think I can go much longer without a cup."

He squinted at her. "Not drinking?"

"No." Elly whisked another chair close and sat on it with a yawn. "Alcohol makes me sleepy."

"Huh." He looked past her to the rowdy crowd behind. "<i>Now</i> what are they doing?"

"Pairing off. The people that brought dates, anyway... and maybe some that didn't. You know people say kissing at the stroke of midnight starts the year off right."

"People say a lot of stupid things."

"Yes. Yes, they do." Her eyes were far away as she spoke, furry cat ears folding back. Aizawa rubbed the back of his neck, staring at her in consternation. Okay. Time to face facts.

This was more than a "mild" attraction.

He wanted to know about her, talk more. He wanted to get coffee and find out how she drank it. Did she like it dark or sweet? Making coffee to individual taste was a personal thing. His thoughts ran on and before he knew he caught himself wondering how <i>she</i> tasted.

Shit.

The countdown had started and she was still just watching, not planning on joining in or interested in finding a partner like most had, whether it friend or lover. Then Aizawa's eyes widened.

She clearly <i>had</i> chosen.

His heart racing in his chest, he got up as the count reached four. He walked over to her and bent to reach, tapping gently on her shoulder. <i>Three</i>. When Elly looked up, startled, he paused. Took a deep breath. <i>Two.</i>

"One...!"

Shota started the new year right.
