Supersized

Els/Hizashi
_

"Aaaughhh... I hate going shopping. It's so boring. Tell me again why can't we order stuff from home and get it delivered?"

Elly ignored her boyfriend as he whined beside her. She always made it a point to tell him he didn't have to come grocery shopping, but he would point out the distressing lack of sweets when she got back. So every Thursday Hizashi dragged himself along with her, complaining the entire time. She gathered some lettuce, then glanced at the onions. Tomatoes were on display as well, and seeing all of these together gave her an idea.

"Zashi," she said sweetly, "Have you ever had a real American style burger?"

"I eat em all the time, you know that babe." He wrapped his arms around her and leaned over to stare morosely into the cart. No candy in sight, only vegetables. He gave his mustache a sad little wiggle and she poked his arm.

"Not the fast food crap. I'm going to buy stuff to make homemade ones. Like we used to grill in the summertime."

His eyes brightened. "Hey, that's a good idea!"

"What do you like besides cheese on yours?"

They had fun picking out ingredients after that, and Hizashi was super thrilled to choose a couple snack bags of chips and some soda.

"This will be great!"

When they got back they set all the ingredients out and Hizashi watched her, fascinated, as she mixed the ground beef and shaped the patties. He sliced some tomatoes and onion and set those aside as she washed her hands again.

"We don't have a grill, though."

"Well, no ... but we have a can. Here, pass me the heavy kitchen shears." She slit the can several ways and carefully bent the strips apart. "Okay. Now the charcoal goes in the bottom with some foil, and we take one of our baking racks to put on top and cook the burgers on."

He watched her in awe. "You're brilliant, babe."

"Pffft." She waved a hand airily about as she carried the contraption to the patio. "I found this online. It wasn't my idea."

They sat together in plastic chairs outside as the burgers cooked. Hizashi held her hand and fidgeted with the ring on one of her fingers, sliding it up and down. He finally turned to her and asked a question that had obviously been on his mind for some time.

"Els?"

"Mmm." She flipped a burger carefully on the little grill.

"You've been here a long time. In Japan, I mean. Ain't'cha homesick?"

"Me? Nah. I might miss a few foods or some silly things like that, but I'm happy here."

"For real?"

She smiled. "For really real, sweetie."

"That's good." He slunk down deeper in the chair, stretching his long legs out. "I want you to stay here forever."

"Aww. You're adorable." She leaned over and kissed his cheek. "Me, too."

"What if you could?" He glanced sideways at her, removing his hand when she said his was done. He grabbed a plate with a bun on it and all the toppings for her to slide it on.

"Stay here forever? Oh, it would be a dream come true, I guess." She pushed the can back and took her plate up. A freshly cooked burger was already on it. She sat it on her lap without looking and gazed out at the campus grounds. "I'm happy here, for the first time in my life." A slight wind blew her hair about as she spoke, and she turned to him to see it blowing some golden strands free of his ponytail as well. His mesmerizing, spiralled eyes were filled with adoration.  Hizashi was speechless, and he looked nervous as hell.

She flicked her ears and reached down to pick up her burger. Then she stopped. "Hizashi Yamada," she began in a curious tone.

"Yes?"

"Is that a <i>ring</i> jammed into my bun?"

"Yes." He bit his lower lip, eyes shining.

"Did you stick an engagement ring into my  bun to ask me to marry you?"

"<i>Yes</i>." Now his voice squeaked. He leaned forward expectantly, hands clutching his slacks in his excitement.

"Well, then." She picked it out and popped the bit of bun that had stuck to it off before sliding it on her finger. She turned and winked at her jittery boyfriend. "Yes."

He grinned and then threw his head back, crying out loudly. "<b><i>She said yes!</i></b>"

Of course, in his emotional state he overdid it. He lost some control of his quirk, startling a flock of birds up on the far side of the neatly manicured lawn. There were startled exclamations from everywhere around and above them their neighbor swore loudly.

"Oh, Hizashi." She held her hand up before her face, laughing softly.

"Congratulations," a voice called blandly from above after a deafening silence reigned for a few moments. "The whole fucking campus knows. Also, you owe me a new coffee cup." A pause. "It had coffee in it, which was hot."

"Sorry, Sho!"

"Tell that to my pants," he snarled. They heard his sliding door shut and Hizashi burst into a fit of giggles. They ate their burgers, their chairs pressed together as close as they could be.

He burped, satisfied. "Aw man, that was excellent."

"I honestly have to admit, that this will, hands down, always be the best burger of my life."
