Aftermath 31

Midnight, of course, was not one to keep silent - especially with rare news like Aizawa proposing to his girlfriend. The entire campus knew within record time: students and faculty alike.

Midnight showed up at her office with Recovery Girl after the couple managed to give the rest of their colleagues the slip in the morning hours. They asked to see the ring right away.

"This is awfully thin, isn't it?" Midnight wrinkled her nose at the dainty sliver of white gold.

"Oh, the jeweler will fuse the engagement ring with the other one he gave me...." She separated them briefly, then slid them back again. "They'll combine to make a thicker wedding band. Same with his; we just have to pick out the one to add to it."

"Ah." Recovery Girl smiled. "Ever logical, that man."

"Yes." Her ears wiggled happily. "Good thing, too. I have no idea how to go about planning anything. I've... well, I never had parties or went to anything special before."

"You didn't go to your prom?"

"No," Elly admitted with a faint blush staining her cheeks. She cut off the dark-haired woman when she was about to ask more questions by repeating it in a firmer tone.

"Oh. Well..."

The door banged open suddenly and Aizawa stumbled in headfirst, zipped snugly up in his bright yellow sleeping bag. His bloodshot eyes were panicky. "They're <i>everywhere</i>," he choked.

Elly rushed over and threw her arms around him to stop his forward momentum. This was not, unfortunately, the new sleeping bag he owned with legs. He hopped a few times and gave up, letting her support him when he kept wobbling from ducking as he heard voices outside the door.

"I think we'll let ourselves out," Recovery Girl murmured. "Congratulations again, dearie."

"Yeah! And give us updates! I don't want to miss out on the shower!"

Elly grinned at them as they passed.

"Are they gone?"

"Yes." She leaned him against the wall and turned a sign over in the glass pane of the door. "There. Now, what's going on? Are the students razzing you?"

"No. It's all of them," he groaned. "The staff, the students... no one will let me rest, they all have questions. Nonstop <i>questions</i>!"

"Uh oh. Well, it will be safe to take your nap here," she told him.

"Good." He sighed peacefully and slid down the wall until he was resting on the floor close to her chair.

"Besides putting up the 'in session' sign, I'll turn you invisible along with me." She offered him her purple-striped tail.

"Clever," he praised quietly with a tired smile. One hand emerged from the bag and pulled the furry, white double-tipped end inside to grip lightly while he snoozed.

Elly worked quietly, mindful of him asleep by her side. She knew he wouldn't be out for long, so it didn't matter if she worked a little slower for awhile.

Sure enough, after a quarter of an hour he jerked back awake with a grunt. "Time?"

She glanced at the corner of her screen. "One-thirty, dear. Bell rings in five."

"Unf." He unzipped himself and crawled out, blinking and scratching his chest absently. Her tail was gently released in the process and she whisked it back behind her.

"Feeling better?"

Aizawa shrugged. "I think I can make it until last bell, anyway." He paused while rolling up his bag. "Mic wants us to meet up with Midnight and a few others tonight, by the way."

"Same place?"

"Yes." He yawned. "I think it's a ... <i>party.</i>" He managed to convey disgust at the idea but was also grinning crookedly at her.

"I bet." She paused. "You're off, right? We can just chill the rest of the night?"

"Yes. You wanted to talk about family and things, too, did you not?"

She groaned. "Yeah... we'll see. We don't have to rush."

He leaned over her desk to kiss her. "No, we don't."
