Music appreciation

It started off as an ordinary English lesson from Present Mic at U.A, with him downing half a cup of coffee as the class pulled out the appropriate books from their bags.

The plan that day was to practice what they'd learned so far, and it went fairly well. By the end of class everyone felt good about themselves, including Hizashi, who decided to try something new.

"We're gonna end on a different note today. Come on over." Hizashi set his phone on the desk. It began playing from one of his playlists; the teens crowded around to listen.

They immediately hit a snag.

"This one's stupid," Bakugo snorted. He lifted his hand to skip to the next on the list.

"Don't you dare!" Hizashi quickly snatched it out of the way. "It's not that bad."

"It's pretty cheesy," Jiro muttered, wrinkling her nose. Several of the others agreed but some were still listening and witholding judgement.

"It's dumb," Bakugo asserted.

"Watch it," Ochako told him. "Remember you're trying to be better."

"I'm already the best, damn it!"

"I tried." She shrugged, looking aside at Jiro.

"Okay, look. We listened," the dark-haired girl reasoned with her teacher. "I like music, but this is... uh. Why do you like this so much?"

"Does Ms. Chesire like it?" Mina burst out in sudden inspiration.

"Well, yeah. That's <i>our</i> song, yo!" Hizashi sounded upset the kids could think such a thing was uncool.

"The words are, um. I guess it's kind of romantic?" Midoriya shrugged, scratching his unruly mop of green hair.

"<i>Romantic</i> and <i>special</i>?!" The self-professed shipper of the class leaped over as close as possible, her eyes wide with excitement. "Oooooh!"

"Why is <i>this</i> your song, Mr. Yamada?"

"Yeah, ribbit! You're like, a DJ and stuff -"

"You've got a near-freaking unexhaustable knoweledge of music. Why this?!"

Hizashi's eyes widened in panic. He could see a slow grin creeping across Mina's face as her own eyes grew in realization. He began to panic, his mouth already going off on several different tangents trying to divert the conversation.

Someone else got to it first, though.

Mineta had been listening closely to the song and the Voice Hero's reactions as the others teased him. "Wait," he gasped, a dribble of blood tricking out of his nose. "Wait, is this what was playing when you guys <i>did it</i> the first time?!"

Everyone looked up in perfect sync to view their English teacher's face, which by now was bright red across his cheeks and nose. His ears also burned hot but at least those were hidden by the headphones he wore. Normally his hazel eyes couldn't be seen either due to his sunglasses, but he was sweating so badly they slipped down his nose. They were giant and clearly filled with a certain kind of terror.

"Holy shit he looks like he's gonna pop."

"Since you're all, uh, talking, hey! Let's stick to English, okay? Learning English through music is really effective in terms of memorizing new vocabulary, 'cause like, ya know how songs get stuck in our minds -"

"Mineta's <i>right</i>?"

"Thanks, dumbass," Bakugo groaned. "Every fucking time I hear this - shut up!" He snapped at them as they shouted at him. "<i>Every time we</i> all <i>hear this we're gonna think about that</i>!"

"Think about what?" A new voice called lightly from the doorway.

"Uh oh."

Elly walked over to her boyfriend, her ears perking up. "Hey, this is the song that was playing when you confessed." She added in English, "When you told me you loved me."

Hizashi nodded. "Yeah." He slipped an arm around her shoulders and she leaned affectionately into his side.

"Awww!"

"Wait, I thought they had -"

"You could've just told us that, geez."

"Yeah, we missed part of lunch for nothing."

The class filed out, the couple watching until the door slid shut. Elly raised an eyebrow but before she could say anything Hizashi groaned.

"They were right!" He pulled her into a massive hug and bent to bury his face in her hair, being careful that his giant neck gear didn't crush her.

"They don't need to know you told me <i>during</i>," she chuckled.

"I panicked!"

"I know, dear."

Just outside the door Mina Ashido clapped both hands over her mouth to stifle the shriek of glee that threatened to burst out. Jiro grimaced and retracted her ear jack from the panel. "I really didn't need to know that," she sighed dismally.

"But it's so <i>cute</i>!"

"Yeah. Sure. You're gonna buy me that ice cream, right? Maybe I can drown my disgust in sweet stuff." She whipped her hand out to motion for the pink-skinned girl to stay quiet. "Uh uh, no. Don't you dare make a 'sweet' joke. I'm done."

"Aw."
